History Durham Tees Valley Airport

DURHAM TEES VALLEY AIRPORT , THE MODERN AIRPORT WITH A HISTORY In September 2004 Teesside International Airport ushered in a new era and changed its name to Durham Tees Valley Airport. The new name was part of an ambitious three year, multi-million pound redevelopment plan by the airport and its strategic regional partners to build on past successes and reinforce its position as one of the UK’s fastest-growing regional airports.

The airport began its life as Royal Air Force Station, Middleton-St-George in 1941. It was in a Lancaster based here that Flight Officer Andrew Mynarski carried out an act of such heroism that he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the last VC to be awarded to an airman of World War II.

Transfer to Civil Use

In 1963 it was decided that RAF Middleton-St-George should close down. The far-sighted local authorities of the day saw the potential of this magnificent airfield as a civil airport. Terms were agreed and the RAF finally departed on 17th April 1964.

How To Reach Durham Tees Valley Airport

By Road

Road signs have now been updated with the new airport name, and as a result the airport is very well sign posted from the above roads and motorways.Taxis are available directly outside the airport terminal.

By Bus/Coach:

The Arriva North East operates the bus services in every half hour during the day.the service connects the airport with Dar lington’s Rail Station and Town Hall. The is free for passengers with proof that they have travelled to/from the airport on the day, or £2 without. Arriva also operates services 20 and 74.If you’re travelling to the airport by car, the airport is very near to the A1(M), A19, A66 and the A67

By Train

Whilst the airport has its own railway station this is only served by two trains per week. The airport is currently in negotiations with Network Rail to make thenearby Dinsdale railway station the main rail link for the airport in the short term

Durham Tees Valley Airport Today

Durham Tees Valley Airport is an airport in North East England, located approximately 10 km east of Darlington, about 16 km south west of Middlesbrough and 39 km south of Durham. The airport is also easily accessible from Stockton-on-Tees,Newcastle,Gateshead,Sunderland, Redcar and Hartlepool.Durham Tees Valley Airport is one of the UK’s smaller airports, but is rapidly expanding, with a growing number of scheduled and charter flights.

The terminal was opened in 1966 by Queen Margaritha of Sweden. The first scheduled service to operate from Teesside International Airport was to Manchester, and since then the airport has developed to satisfy much of the air transport needs of the area.

As well as a significant scheduled service network the airport has also built up a variety of inclusive tour holiday destinations

Car Parking

There are now two separate car parks for passengers to use upon their arrival at the airport.

The main car park is situated in front of the terminal building and a ‘drop off-pick up’ car park can be found to the side of the terminal building. There will be no charge to drivers using the ‘drop off-pick up’ car park for up to 15 minutes.

Parking bays, allocated for blue-badge holders, are located close to the terminal in the Park and Stay car park.

Passengers are advised to ensure that badges are clearly displayed at all times when parked in these bays.

Coventry Airport – Summer Take Off

With news that UK airports are threatening industrial action over the summer months Coventry Airport is anticipating a great summer season.

The handling at Coventry Airport is undertaken by private company Coventry Airport Handling so is not affected by industrial action.

Managing Director of Coventry Airport, said: “Unlike many people travelling this summer passengers from Coventry Airport can travel with reassurance that their holiday or business trip will not be affected by any baggage handling disputes. As well as offering a good range of destinations at great fares from the region’s local airport this is another reason for people to choose to fly from Coventry.”

This summer will be the airport’s first summer of such a full range of passenger flights and the airport is preparing for the extra passengers it will see when the schools break up for the summer and the start of the peak holiday time.

Director of Communications for Coventry Airport, said: “During the school holiday period alone we anticipate 20,000 people will pass through Coventry Airport to the destinations in France, Spain, Italy and Jersey.

As we approach the peak holiday time we are already seeing a change in customer profile and are already seeing more families and multi-generation groups heading off for longer durations than the passengers during the first months of operation. A significant proportion of the travellers are overseas property owners and their friends and family. We have also seen repeat bookings from customers travelling as many as 7 times through the summer months.

“We are already seeing foreign students from Warwick University heading home for their summer study leave and are astounded at the volume of passengers originating overseas, arriving to holiday in the area. The enquiries received both at the airport and by phone and email show that these passengers are keen to visit the area’s wealth of attractions.

“We continue to monitor the feedback from our changing customers in order that we can cater for their needs going forwards both in the plans for the permanent terminal facility and the service provided at the airport.”

With the growth of the airport a new carrier, the ACMI company, Jetstream Executive, operating under the name, Jetstream Express, are to introduce flights from the airport to Belfast City Airport from (May), Aberdeen Airport (from June) and Southampton Airport (from July).

The Belfast route is in competition with Jet2, who operate twice daily between Blackpool and Belfast International. Two Jetstream 31s will be based at the airport. However, in June 2007 a notice appeared on the Jetsteam Express website stating – “With immediate effect, Jetstream Express have ceased operating the routes to Blackpool, Aberdeen, Southampton and Belfast”, adding that all flights were withdrawn as the routes have not proved viable.

In 2007 Jet2 cancelled its Prague and Amsterdam services. Ryanair also cancelled its twice daily flights to London Stansted stating that it fell into the bottom three routes across its network.
